About Emily

Emily and her family

Hi, I’m Emily Sirota, and I’m running for Colorado Senate District 32. I’m a mom and a social worker, and I’m on a mission to make our state a place where we’re not just surviving—we’re all thriving. As State Representative of House District 9, I currently serve as the chair of the Joint Budget Committee and as Vice Chair of the House Appropriations Committee, where I have guided our state policy to lift up children and families, public education, a clean environment and an empowered workforce.

Prior to my election to the Colorado House of Representatives, I helped run an early learning center in Denver. I’ve worked with families navigating the early years, and I know how hard it is to make it all work, usually when you’re just getting going in your career and learning how to be a parent. I’ve worked as a community organizer, engaging with voters on campaigns to pass paid sick leave and to defeat an anti-opportunity ballot measure and a racial profiling measure. I received my B.A. in Political Science from Indiana University and a Master of Social Work from the University of Denver. I served as a policy aide to a Democratic U.S. Senator, a Democratic Congressman, and a Democratic Governor. In those roles, I worked on healthcare and budget policy, overseeing the creation of a program to expand health insurance to workers and small businesses.

I’m the daughter of a retired pediatrician and a retired second grade teacher. My parents modeled the values of service, integrity, empathy and resilience; and I work to embody those values every day. I’m married to writer David Sirota, and we’re the proud parents of two incredible children and our dog Grover. Our family’s challenges mirror the challenges I hear from families across the district. How will we find or afford childcare? How will we save for college for our kids? How can we afford the everyday costs that keep going up faster than our income? I love our state and our community, and I work every day to move us from surviving to thriving. We’ve accomplished a lot in the last 8 years, but there’s still much left to do. I will work in collaboration with you to make Colorado the best place to live, work, start a business and raise a family.
